Hi Friends!
I’ve had some great questions come my way and am so happy to see so much interest in exploring food combining principles. However, I just want to be sure to make one thing clear, food combining DOES NOT need to be an all or nothing thing. Adopting some principles, such as just eating fruit on an empty stomach, is a great way to start and a great way to assist your digestion. There is no need to panic if you eat a starch+protein or a starch+a nut together one meal, especially in the beginning, just be aware of how you feel after. All of our digestion is different, some are better able to handle it better than others! Through the research I have done, I have learned that if you are going to miscombine, it’s best to do it later on in the day/evening as this leaves more time for you body to work on digesting it. I can basically guarantee you that I will not be sticking to these principles 100% of the time, the thought of never having almond butter smeared on toast is enough to bring me to tears
I know I feel better when I follow food combining principles, but sometimes satisfying your cravings is worth having some mild digestive symptoms
I just want to make sure you guys don’t think I am promoting a super strict, restrictive way of eating. I in NO way, ever want to encourage that. I just want to share tips that have helped me and encourage you to take what you like and leave what you don’t
Today has been a pretty good day, I found myself to be hungrier more often today, however, my hunger may have been mistaken for boredom
Again, I started my morning with hot water + lemon + cayenne and shortly after (about an hour) I had this stunning green juice.
Romaine lettuce + kale + 2 celery stalks + green apple + 1/2 lemon.
Soooo delicious – I love the tartness of the green apple. Although this tasted wonderful, it didn’t do much to silence the grumbles in my tummy, so about an hour and a half later, I blended up a nutrient/calorie packed smoothie.
1 banana, 1/2 avocado, 1tbsp EFA oil, 1/2 c water, 1/2 c almond milk, 2-3 c spinach, splash of agave.
Just as a reminder, because you may be confused as to why this is a properly combine smoothie – banana, although a fruit, does combine safely with an avocado (it is one of the “exception” rules).
This held me over for just over 3 hrs, so I knew I was safe to switch categories. I was craving protein, big time, so I decided to whip up yet another smoothie/shake.
1 scoop sun warrior protein powder, 1/2c water, 1/2 c almond milk, 1 tbsp coconut butter, 1/2 tbsp raw carob powder.
And because I had, had liquids all day, was really needing something to chew on (twss) LOL. So had a piece of raw bread on the side.
This smoothie combination was SO tasty, it tasted just like chocolate milk, SO satisfying. I’m not sure that the raw bread really combined with the smoothie, but I didn’t notice any effects from it, so it was fine for me
I munched on a plate of raw veggies before dinner, and dinner then decided on a huge bowl of steamed veggies over organic mixed greens for dinner.
Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, red onion, and zucchini with 1/2 tbsp flax oil, braggs, 1tsp agave, and hot sauce as a delicious dressing. On the side I had two slice of Ezikiel toast with raw honey + coconut butter. This meal is the reason why I will never be fully raw. I just loveee steamed veggies and I loveeee toast. I was totally craving dessert but wasn’t sure what would combine well with this meal. Banana’s combine well with a starch and avocado’s and bananas are a good match, so basically I just threw these in the blender and whipped up a DELICOUS pudding for dessert.
1/2 banana, 1/4 avocado, splash of almond milk, stevia, 1/2 tbsp raw carob powder
Again, I’m not certain this was a perfectly combined meal – if anyone out there is an expert, please feel free to let me know. All I know is this pudding was out of this world – it may not look pretty, but it tasted heavenly!!
Not sure if I’ll have another snack tonight, American Idol is on and I’ll be tuning in, chances are snacking will happen, but I’ll let you know tomorrow
Happy Hump Day! We are more than halfway there!!!
xoxo

Hey girl,
What kind of Juicer to you use for that gorgeous Green juice? I would love to be able to make my own juices, but concerned about (a) the cost of a juicer, (b) precious counter space, (c) messiness & clean-up…

This is all so interesting, how would you suggest starting to combine foods better, I know you mentioned eating fruit by itself, etc… how did you do it? Thanks!

Hi Krissy,
I just found your blog through Oh She Glows and I love it! I was wondering if you are doing the CSNN program, because I’m thinking about starting it by correspondence. If you’re taking it, what do you think? I’d love to hear your impressions of the school and the course materials, if you get a chance.
Great blog…I’ll be back for sure!

I think that I need to have my food combining principles written down on a card for my wallet at all times. I can never remember them, but my body sure does when I mess up!! Ever since I started feeding it proper fuel, my stomach is so sensitive!
